We dedicate this international event to
aspects of river-ecology, species protection and flood control
in close connection to the ecology of large herbivores,
their impact on and interrelations with the
dynamic stands and biocenoses of floodplains.
As natural elements of the european nature the megaherbivore fauna plays a main role as leading ecofactor, which until now is more or less forgotten or misunderstood. Inundations and all related dynamics of water are more or less solely accepted as the principal factor, which makes the biocenoses of river ecosystems azonal.
Due to the impact by grazing, browsing etc. on the vegetation, the initation of new and usage of traditional trails from small to large dimensions, and other activities as social animals “play”, large Herbivores highly influence the potential and real impact of the flowing water on sedimentation,
erosion, soils and the whole landscape structure. By that,
the megaherbivore fauna has to be attributed the next
leading and “azonalizing” ecofactor in river ecosystems besides the water.
In that symposium we aim to show the meaning and importance of those – highly but forgotten – natural impacts and interferences as part of the natural cooperative dynamics in structure and time of river-ecosystems. Water a n d large herbivores (and in paleo-times Dinosauers played that role!) do influence and induce markedly the known variety of river-types as well as woodland and river-bottom meadows .. .
Martin Görner and me herewith invite you cordially, to attend this symposium!
We would appreciate your contribution with a lecture, poster or film about ideas and experiences from your studies with Megaherbivores. Contributions of theoretical or visionary character are as welcome as lectures postres and/or films about very recent case-studies and beginning or ongoing projects.
Contributions may deal with megaherbivore-ecology and/or river- ecology separately or combined, dependent toyour areas of study, opinions and visions.
Please spread this message as invitation to friends and colleagues to attend and/or contribute further lectures or posters in Jena
In consequence of that event a resolution on further dealing with rivers and the megaherbivore fauna in Europe toward more evolutionary perspectives a n d the security of our society shall be published on Nov. 3rd. 2011.
We look forward your answer and invited cooperation
thank You!
